A&nbsp;<strong>famous<\/strong>&nbsp;centre for Hindu-Vedic learning and Islamic philosophy, the temples and mosques of this region are&nbsp;<strong>well known<\/strong>&nbsp;for their spectacular festivals. The term,&nbsp;<strong><em>Malappuram<\/em><\/strong>, which means &#8220;<strong>over the hill<\/strong>&#8221; in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malayalam\">Malayalam<\/a>, is derived from the geography of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malappuram\">Malappuram<\/a>, the administrative headquarters of the district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the early medieval period, the district was home to two of the four major kingdoms that ruled Kerala.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Perumpadappu,_Malappuram\">Perumpadappu<\/a>&nbsp;was the hometown of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingdom_of_Cochin\">Kingdom of Cochin<\/a>, which is also known as&nbsp;<em>Perumbadappu Swaroopam<\/em>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nediyiruppu\">Nediyiruppu<\/a>&nbsp;(an area under&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kondotty\">Kondotty<\/a>&nbsp;municipality) was the hometown of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zamorin_of_Calicut\">Zamorin of Calicut<\/a>, which is also known as&nbsp;<em>Nediyiruppu Swaroopam<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mamangam<\/strong> was a&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/duodecennial\">duodecennial<\/a>&nbsp;medieval fair<\/strong> held on the bank, and on the dry river-bed, of&nbsp; Bharathappuzha at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thirunavaya\">Tirunavaya<\/a>, southern India. The Hindu temple associated with the festival was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tirunavaya_Temple\">Nava Mukunda Temple<\/a>,Tirunavaya. It seems to have begun as a temple festival, <strong>analogous to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kumbh_Mela\">Kumbha Melas<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ujjain_Simhastha\">Ujjaini<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Allahabad_Kumbh_Mela\">Prayaga<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haridwar_Kumbh_Mela\">Haridwar<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kumbakonam\">Kumbakonam<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mamankam_festival#cite_note-:0-1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tirunavaya, is known for its ancient&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hinduism\">Hindu<\/a>&nbsp;temples. The festival was most flamboyantly celebrated under the auspices and at the expenses of the Hindu chiefs of Kozhikode (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Calicut\">Calicut<\/a>), the Samutiris (the Zamorins).
